Pest Guide

Common Pests Found in the UAE

Ants

Ants are prevalent insect pests that live in colonies. They attack households, restaurants, hospitals, offices, warehouses, and other buildings where they can find food and water but they are more usually attracted to sweets. There are more than 12,400 species of ants throughout the world and sometimes confused with the unrelated Termites (Order Isoptera) partly because the latter have the common name 'white ants'

Flies

Flies are among the aerialists of the insect world. They can fly both forward and backwards, hover, turn on a dime and even flip upside down to land on a ceiling. They’re very diverse, coming in many shapes and range in size from miniscule to two inches long. Flies are generally connected with dirt, decay and disease as many species of fly are known to carry disease due to their ingestion of animal faeces, and connection with decaying bodies.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are insects found in nearly every part of the world. Although they are one of the most primitive living insects, they are very adaptable and highly successful. Some of the species have invaded human habitats and are considered pests since they can spread diseases. They contaminate food, destroy fabric and paper products, impart stains and unpleasant odors to surfaces they contact and transmit bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are vectors of most deadly illnesses. Their itchy, irritating bite can cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva that causes the red bump and itching. But a more serious consequence of some mosquito bites may be transmission of serious diseases and viruses such as malaria, dengue virus, Zika and West Nile virus, which can lead to disabling and potentially deadly effects (such as encephalitis, meningitis and microcephaly). They breed in almost any aquatic situation such as ponds, marshes, woodland pools, ditches, and water in tree holes, old tires or anything that will hold water.

Venomous Pests

Due to our hot desert environment, dangerous venomous pests such as snakes, scorpions, Red Back spiders and hornets can sometimes be encountered. They are found virtually everywhere, and inspectors risk encountering one while visiting a property.

Termites

Termites are widely known as a silent destroyer pest to have in your home or business. It can cause extensive damage to the structure of a building if they are not inspected, managed or treated. They are known to be one of the most costly pests that could cause billions of dollars worth of damage. Their intricate way of living allows termites to silently devour the structural integrity of a building, allowing them to completely destroy a home in just two years if left undetected.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, nocturnal, wingless insects that belong to the family of Cimicidae. They feed on human blood and other warm-blooded hosts. They are oval in shape and grow up to 4 to 5 mm long when fully grown. Their skin color is rust brown to a deeper red brown. The adult bed bug does not have wings and has a flattened body.

Birds

Some birds can cause structural damage to buildings and homes, and others can pose health threats associated with their droppings. For example, pigeons are filthy birds, causing disease and damage. Other pests may live on these birds, including fleas, lice, mites, ticks, and other pests.

Rodents

Rodents are warm-blooded mammals that, like humans, can be found throughout the world. They have oversized front teeth for gnawing and check teeth, which are adapted for chewing. Rodents chew on a variety of items available to them and cause great damage in and around homes.

Other Pests

Unusual pests can often be found attacking our food or even carpets, furniture and clothes. These pests normally come under the category of Stored Product Insects and Fabric Pests, and include many species.
